What is Pilates? Joseph Pilates said that ‘contrology', his approach to exercise ‘develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit'. Pilates (pronounced "puh-lah-teez") is
a system of controlled movements that engage the mind and condition the
total body. It is a balanced blend of strength and flexibility
training that improves posture, reduces stress and creates long,
lean muscles without bulking up. It requires working with control not
struggle – and heightened self-awareness. Because the focus is on quality
of movement rather than quantity, Pilates helps you to feel invigorated
rather than exhausted after a session. Body awareness is key to good technique.
Taking a balanced approach so that no muscle group is overworked, you
are training your body to work as an efficient, holistic system in daily
activity. Pilates needs discipline. Joseph Pilates said:
As an antidote to our ever busy lives, no wonder Pilates has become so popular. The combination of breath and rhythmic flowing movement leads to a sense of inner calm and relaxation.
Some exercises are performed on specialized
Pilates equipment including the Pilates Reformer, Cadillac and Ladder
Barrel, but the fundamental moves can be done on a standard floor mat.
Small accessories including balls, bands and rings can be added to the
repertoire for more variety. Terms and Conditions / Site Designed by Graydaw Ltd |
