What is Pilates?

Joseph Pilates said that ‘contrology', his approach to exercise ‘develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit'.

Pilates (pronounced "puh-lah-teez") is a system of controlled movements that engage the mind and condition the total body. It is a balanced blend of strength and flexibility training that improves posture, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without bulking up. It requires working with control not struggle – and heightened self-awareness. Because the focus is on quality of movement rather than quantity, Pilates helps you to feel invigorated rather than exhausted after a session. Body awareness is key to good technique. Taking a balanced approach so that no muscle group is overworked, you are training your body to work as an efficient, holistic system in daily activity.

Whilst working several muscle groups simultaneously through smooth, continuous motion, Pilates also has a particular concentration on strengthening and stabilizing the core (the abdomen, back and pelvic girdle region, sometimes referred to as the "powerhouse"). This core strength enables the body to move more freely and posture to be improved, thus freeing up joints to their appropriate function.

Pilates needs discipline. Joseph Pilates said:

“you must always … keep your mind wholly concentrated on the purpose of the exercises as you perform them”

As an antidote to our ever busy lives, no wonder Pilates has become so popular. The combination of breath and rhythmic flowing movement leads to a sense of inner calm and relaxation.

Some exercises are performed on specialized Pilates equipment including the Pilates Reformer, Cadillac and Ladder Barrel, but the fundamental moves can be done on a standard floor mat. Small accessories including balls, bands and rings can be added to the repertoire for more variety.

Ideally, Pilates is practised under the careful supervision of a certified Pilates instructor, either one-on-one or in group sessions. A good instructor will know how to tailor a Pilates program to meet your individual needs and abilities, monitoring movements to ensure correct form for optimum results.
