Pilates in Pregnancy - Detailed Information

What does it do?

Pilates is a long established physical training method that builds up strength in the "core muscles" and is focussed on muscle balance and posture. In the past few years it has become very popular with the rapid growth of classes across the country.

Lindsey says, "Pilates strengthens the pelvic floor, abdominal and back muscles and provides an excellent method of relaxation. I was amazed to think that this wonderful technique wasn't being taught to all pregnant mums and decided that everyone should benefit from it. The DVD and video seemed a natural way to pass on all my knowledge."

Who's it for?

When you're pregnant your body is under pressure - the spine and pelvis can be pulled out of their natural alignment. Muscles are stretched and don't support the skeleton in the same way. This can lead to back ache, increased feelings of tiredness and poor joint stability. Tone of your muscles and awareness about posture are really important if you are to take care of yourself.

The Programme has huge benefits:

•  teaching you postural awareness
•  making you stronger and more able to carry the baby well
•  helping you to focus and relax - great for labour!!
•  teaching you to have good control of your pelvic floor and deep tummy muscles

After you've had your baby it will:

•  help you regain pelvic control quickly
•  assist with toning of deep abdominals and regain your figure quickly
•  give you "me" time which is relaxed and focussed
•  improve your posture which may have become rounded

Each person is unique and every pregnancy is different. It is vital that you seek medical advice before embarking on any exercise programme.

Once you have, it's good to keep fit aerobically as well as keeping your muscles toned and strong. Walking, low impact aerobics and swimming are all great things to be doing - even cycling, if your bump isn't too big!!

Background of the video - why?

Lindsey's passion for fitness started as a hobby and quickly developed into a career. Having trained as a fitness instructor and sports masseur, Lindsey discovered and fell in love with Pilates.

Lindsey taught and practised Pilates throughout her second pregnancy - she knows how to modify moves safely and what your body feels like as it gets larger and heavier!

Astounded at the lack of clear advice for Pilates enthusiasts who happened to be pregnant, she set out to make a safe and informative Pilates video for pregnant ladies. Aiming to strengthen "the core", pelvic floor, abdominal and back muscles are the key targets - along with relaxation and focus.

Lindsey's husband Mike is a qualified Chartered and State Registered Physiotherapist and provided the link with the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women's Health. The video was made in conjunction with and fully endorsed by this professional, medical body - of which we are very proud.

And so, " Pilates in Pregnancy " was born in October 2001!
